CORDIS launches Finnish Presidency R&D and Innovation Information Service

CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, has launched a new online service covering the research and innovation activities carried out under the Finnish Presidency of the Council of the European Union (1 July to 31 December 2006). Highlighting the latest news and most relevant developments in the research and development (R&D) policy sphere during this period, the Finnish Presidency Service is part of the gateway to national and regional activities on CORDIS.

Particular emphasis is placed on the Finnish research and innovation programme during the country's time at the helm. During its six-month Presidency, Finland's main aim will be to successfully conclude the negotiations on the Seventh R&D Framework Programme (2007 - 2013). Furthermore, agreement to start work on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project will be sought.

In more general terms, Finland intends to work towards improving the EU's global competitiveness and R&D capacities. Particular emphasis is also put on Europe's innovative capacities and on developing markets to create more demand for innovation.

Throughout the Presidency, there will be numerous events, ranging from formal and informal ministerial meetings to open conferences, to support Finnish efforts to develop and strengthen the European innovation environment. Many events will also support and improve cooperation in innovation and research policy and between researchers and financing organisations.

The CORDIS Finnish Presidency Service is a central gateway to R&D and innovation activities carried out during the Finnish Presidency. It provides up-to-date information on policy initiatives, and highlights the latest R&D developments in a dedicated news section. Visitors to the site can also stay informed about upcoming and recent events organised by Finland.

Links to other relevant websites, notably those of the Finnish R&D and innovation actors, provide readers with important resources for further information about the R&D and innovation sector in one of the world's most innovative countries. Analyses of the innovation and R&D systems in Finland, as well as a comprehensive projects and results database, are also made available via the national CORDIS service for Finland.

Finally, the 'showcases' will provide an in-depth overview of particularly important initiatives, success stories or developments.

The Finnish Presidency service on CORDIS is therefore a comprehensive gateway for everyone interested in R&D policy in Europe and in Finland over the next six months. It was developed by CORDIS in cooperation with the relevant Finnish authorities and is available in English and Finnish.
