University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) Purchases Latest RIS from Carestream Health

Carestream HealthFollowing a recent European tender process, Carestream Health has been awarded the contract to supply a new Radiology Information System (RIS) for eight departments at the University Medical Centre, Groningen (UMCG), The Netherlands. Installation is scheduled for December 2010 and the CARESTREAM RIS will interface with an existing Rogan PACS.

UMCG is one of the largest hospitals in the world, offering regional tertiary care to the northern part of The Netherlands. The Radiology Department undertakes approximately 180,000 exams annually, equating to around 500 patients per working day.

This latest installation will mean that Carestream Health is present in all the hospitals within the Provence of Groningen. Stichting Samenwerkende Ziekenhuizen (SSZOG) signed a seven-year RIS/PACS eHealth Managed Services (eMS) with Carestream Health in March 2010 and Martini Hospital currently has a four-year RIS/PACS agreement with the Company.

"The CARESTREAM RIS gives us the opportunity to structure and control our workflow, which contributes to an improvement in patient care by reducing the time between examination and report. This flexible web based RIS allows us to personalise the system, such as work lists for our radiologists," said Mr Piet ten Bhomer, Head of Technical Affairs at UMCG.

The latest CARESTREAM RIS platform represents Carestream Health's next generation information system technology, which is designed to reduce the complexity of radiology administration and improve workflow by minimising manual intervention. The result is automation of the patient's diagnostic journey from order entry to results distribution.

This powerful workflow solution offers:

  • Flexibility to tailor the system to individual requirements in order to take advantage of existing workflow efficiencies
  • Versatility for automating the order entry process by allowing requesting physicians to enter orders directly through an HL-7 hospital information system (HIS) or via secure Web communication
  • Exam scheduling that is automatic, eliminating manual procedures, and allowing for scheduling at multiple sites
  • Monitoring and documentation of patient progress and procedures for improved workflow, productivity, and patient care
  • A Web module to enable secure, convenient communications with referring physicians and hospital based clinicians
