CSC Announces European ePrescription Solution to Reduce Medical Errors Whilst Improving Efficiency and Patient Safety

CSCCSC (NYSE: CSC) announced a European-wide ePrescription solution. The solution provides national ePrescription services to replace manual prescription processes with a paperless, integrated, computerised system. Designed to reduce prescription and administration errors, CSC's ePrescription solution helps improve the management of medication and prescriptions, resulting in higher levels in the quality of patient care and patient safety. Based on the experience of implementing a successful ePrescribing system in Denmark, the CSC ePrescription solution will be made suitable for deployment across all other European countries.

"All countries are now striving to improve the quality of medication information available to those involved in the patient care cycle, not only to deliver better standards of care but to help streamline their overall processes," commented Harald Deutsch, Vice President Healthcare EMEA, CSC.

By introducing a joined-up, electronic approach to prescriptions, CSC's ePrescription solution not only reduces medical errors, but also makes the entire process more efficient, freeing up time for all those involved in patient care. Providing all healthcare partners, including clinicians, hospitals and pharmacies, with access to a single view of a patient’s medication profile, the CSC solution eliminates the administration normally associated with managing manual prescriptions, therefore improving operational efficiency and auditing procedures.

"Having worked with the Danish National Board of Health and Danish hospitals and Home Care Solutions, and having deployed ePrescription solutions for the last 7 years, our proven solution aims to provide other countries with a fast-track, cost-effective way of achieving the same 'best practice' results," explains Freddy Lykke, Managing Director of the CSC Healthcare Solution Centre. "We believe we are the first company to offer such a solution that is applicable for all European countries, whatever the level of maturity of its healthcare service delivery infrastructure."

A Web-based solution built on international standards, CSC's ePrescription system enables the secure access and transmission of prescriptions between both national healthcare partners and European healthcare systems, complying with epSOS, IHE and HL7 standards. Providing electronic prescription transmission, a centralised prescription repository and shared medication profiles, the solution also supports eHealth delivery through connectivity to clinical portals.

CSC's solution is based upon its Opus Medication solutions and Home Care Solution, CSC VITAE Suite, which interfaces with a national repository of prescriptions developed by the Danish National Board of Health. CSC will be adapting all three components and will develop different implementation sequences to fit other countries' specific needs.

The benefits of CSC's ePrescription solution include: a reduction in medication and administration errors; increased patient safety; more accurate and faster access to prescription information; the availability of a medication profile and decision support across all healthcare partners, including clinicians, pharmacies and hospitals; the ability to audit information on drug usage; monitoring of prescribing and wastage patterns; the ability to check for side effects, drug interactions, allergies and double medications as well as ongoing patient management post discharge.

The ePrescription solution is one of a number of innovative healthcare solutions that are being implemented by CSC across Europe, including eHealth, clinical and care management solutions, plus payer side systems for health and accident insurance. CSC's involvement in deploying a number of large-scale National eHealth Programmes, such as initiatives from the UK, the Netherlands and Denmark, is a clear demonstration as to how CSC is helping to make eHealthcare delivery a reality.

CSC's Healthcare Group, which serves healthcare providers, health plans, pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers, and allied industries around the world, is a global leader in transforming the healthcare industry through the effective use of information to improve healthcare outcomes, decision-making and operating efficiency.
