HL7 UK 2006 - The Future of Integration

AbiesHotel Russell, Russell Square, London, UK

HL7 UK's annual conference is on 25-26 October. This is the one event of the year that you really should attend to find out what is happening in healthcare interoperability. There is a lot going on, which you may not know about unless you have been directly involved. This is your chance to get up to date.

The theme of this year's conference is the future of interoperability and the programme accurately reflects this theme.

Keynotes
The first day of the conference provides a rare opportunity to hear two distinguished speakers: Wes Rishel Vice-President of Gartner and member of the HL7.org Board, and Jagdip Grewal, Chief Technical Architect at NHS Connecting for Health.

On the second day the keynotes are from Norbert Mikula, Director of EHR Technology at Intel, Charles Parisot, Leader of the IHE Initiative at GE Healthcare and Keith Naylor of iSOFT.

Presentations
The other presentations are organised in six main sessions:
1. Standard Strategies (Wed Q2)
2. Panel - Are UK-wide interoperability Standard are possible? with views from Scotland and Wales (Wed Q3)
3. Using SNOMED CT for semantic integration (Wed Q4)
4. Implementing HL7 (Thurs Q2)
5. Enhancing HL7 (Thurs Q3)
6. Panel - Is meaningful communication possible without a common record architecture? (Thurs Q4)

Tutorials
Some of the latest developments are previewed in the four pre-conference tutorials:
1. The US Nationwide Health Information Network: A Market-Based Approach to Clinical Interoperability (Wes Rishel, Gartner Inc, USA) This tutorial describes the details of the new market-based strategy to provide everyone in the USA with interoperable EHRs within a decade. Some of the ideas could become relevant here.
2. UML ITS Considerations: Implications for Implementers (Grahame Grieve, Jiva Medical, Australia). This Tutorial describes the important new proposals developed by Grahame Grieve and NHS Connecting for Health to provide clearer and easier to implement HL7 V3 Implementation Technology Specifications (ITS).
3. HL7 TermInfo and SNOMED CT (David Markwell, Clinical Information Consultancy, Reading). This Tutorial describes the solutions proposed by the HL7-SNOMED TermInfo project to specify how best to carry SNOMED-coded clinical information in all HL7 V3 messages.
4. Clinical Document Architecture (CDA) (Ann Wrightson, CSW Group, Oxford). This tutorial describes the design principles of HL7 CDA Release 2, which is now being proposed for use by the NHS Connecting for Health.

Evening Event
The HL7 UK conference is a unique networking event for everyone involved with healthcare interoperability. The evening event on Wednesday 25 October will be held for the second year on the restaurant ship, Hispaniola, which is moored on the Thames opposite the London Eye.
