Technology Partnership Between InterComponentWare AG (ICW) and Roche Diabetes Care Results in Launch of Overarching Web-based Solution

InterComponentWareICW technology sits in the center of the new online portal Accu-Chek® Connect which was recently introduced by Roche Diabetes Care. This new web-based solution empowers healthcare professionals and people living with diabetes to ease daily diabetes management. It enables seamless collaboration based on a central information view across blood glucose measurement devices, smartphone-apps, and offline solutions in current use.

ICW provided technology and development expertise into the technology partnership with Roche Diabetes Care, a global leader in diabetes management solutions. Jointly a next-generation system for effective and efficient self-management of individual diabetes therapies by people with diabetes was created, which allows to easily involve their healthcare professionals and caregivers into the process. The solution is built on top of a technology platform that facilitates the secure management of data as well as the shared use of that data between healthcare professionals and people with diabetes via the web. The solution also provides substantial reporting, intuitive graphics and easy-to-interpret visualization of relevant blood glucose and insulin data.

Regular and structured capture and evaluation of blood glucose and insulin data plays a pivotal part in effective diabetes management, but is usually challenging since multiple devices and data management approaches are used. Being able to consolidate all data in Roche Diabetes Care's shared Accu-Chek Connect platform ensures having the most reliable information base for their diabetes self-management to the person with diabetes. They can also use a simple and straightforward way of granting their healthcare professional access to all data relevant for making therapy decisions. This may result in greater adherence to recommendations and goals, and can lead to a better managed diabetes condition.

The online portal was built on top of the ICW eHealth Framework, which provides a modular, standards-oriented, and mature foundation for integration and secure management of sensitive personal health information. The ICW eHealth Framework enabled transferring measurement, medical and other diabetes related data from blood glucose measurement devices via PCs or smartphones to the web-based solution. Overlapping data streams are aggregated into a unique record, from which information required by the diabetes specialist or general practitioner for successful therapeutic intervention is derived. Managing this wealth of information on top of a framework that was built with personal health information security as an underlying design principle simplified adhering to different data privacy regulations across multiple target countries and provided corresponding auditability.

In partnership with Roche Diabetes Care, ICW configured and custom developed the aspects related to diabetes management and visualization. Scott Baxter, Head of Diabetes Management & Platform Solutions at Roche Diagnostics: "ICW's experience in state-of-the-art application design, information security and agile development significantly helped achieve the key goal of an intuitive and easy-to-use solution."
