HIMSS EuropeThree leading European hospitals won the Stage 6 HIMSS Europe EMRAM awards at a ceremony in Rome. The award is given to European hospitals that represent best practices in implementation of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

The recently established HIMSS Analytics Europe, has over the past month been assessing hospitals across 10 European countries, to determine if they would qualify for the EMRAM Stage 6 & 7 award. The three announced winners were:

Odense University Hospital (DK), ISMETT Hospital (I) and Geneva University Hospital

Uwe Buddrus, General Manager of HIMSS Analytics Europe announced the EMRAM winners and said: "It is a great honor for me to present these first three EMRAM awards ever to be won in Europe. With this award we are encouraging hospitals to frequently assess their IT solutions so that they can provide better quality and safety for their patients. We look forward to supporting hospitals across Europe in achieving Stage 6 & 7 EMRAM levels."

The awards ceremony took place at the HIMSS Europe Health IT Leadership Summit in Rome, on September 30, at 18.00.

The University Hospitals of Geneva (HUG) is the largest public hospital consortium in Switzerland, with more than 2'000 beds, 50'000 inpatients admissions and 850'000 outpatient visits each year. Covering the whole range of primary, secondary and tertiary care, the HUG, with more than 10'000 collaborators representing about 8'500 FTE's, is the largest employer of Geneva state. The HUG serves as a community public hospital and a teaching and reference center for the region, including highly specialized medicine such as organ transplants, cellular therapy, genetics and clinical neurosciences.

Odense University Hospital is a centre of major importance within the Danish hospital and specialist services system, as are Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen and Aarhus University Hospital. It is a highly specialised hospital whose functions cover all medical specialist areas, collated within a single framework. There are approximately 8,000 employees at OUH, which makes the hospital one of the largest in northern Europe.

ISMETT Hospital The Istituto Mediterraneo per i Trapianti e Terapie ad Alta Specializzazione (ISMETT) is a joint public-private partnership between the Region of Sicily, through Civico and Cervello hospitals in Palermo, and UPMC, an integrated global health enterprise headquartered in Pittsburgh, USA. Over the past decade, ISMETT has become one of the leading organ transplant centers in Europe and a major referral center for other Mediterranean countries. More than 1000 transplant procedures have been performed at ISMETT with outstanding clinical results. ISMETT's one-year survival rate for liver transplant recipients is the highest in Italy.

About the EMR Adoption Model for Europe
Understanding the level of electronic medical record (EMR) capabilities in hospitals is a challenge in the European healthcare IT market today. HIMSS Analytics Europe has adapted the EMR Adoption Model (EMRAM) created by HIMSS Analytics and established across the U.S. and Canada. The model identifies the 8 levels (0-7) of electronic medical record (EMR) capabilities ranging from limited ancillary department systems through a paperless EMR environment. HIMSS Analytics Europe has developed a methodology and algorithms to automatically score hospitals in our database relative to their IT enabled clinical transformation status, to provide peer comparisons for hospital organizations as they strategize their path to a complete EMR and participation in an electronic health record (EHR). The EMRAM brings best practices and benchmarking to healthcare providers throughout Europe and identifies hospitals with best practices for implementing sophisticated EMR environments that fully engage their clinicians.
