Tunstall Showcases Telehealth Solutions at Commissioning 2011 Conference

Tunstall HealthcareTunstall Healthcare will be showcasing its latest telehealthcare solutions and demonstrating results from recent telehealth deployments at this year's Commissioning 2011 event in London.

Tunstall is also supporting a case study led session: 'Unlocking the benefits of telehealth for GPs', which will be delivered by Dr. Ombarish Banerji and Maria Tanner. The session will explore the role of telehealth within the NHS and the benefits of its deployment, such as improving patient care and reducing non-elective hospital admissions.

Dr. Ombarish Banerji is currently the clinical lead for Bexley Care Trust's Telehealth project. Ombarish joined Bexley's GP Leadership Scheme in September 2010, and is currently undertaking the BMJ Postgraduate Clinical Leadership Programme.

Maria Tanner recently led on the implementation of telehealth in Oxleas, and is passionate that the outcomes for the service users and staff have been extremely positive. This has been evidenced with reduced unscheduled hospital attendance and increased capacity within the service.

After the Prime Minister's announcement today that monitoring your own long term condition at home gives you control and independence and is beneficial for the NHS, Tunstall is keen to demonstrate the successes being achieved by commissioners throughout the UK.

Tunstall has selected two case studies to showcase at the event, one of which is NHS Bristol’s telehealth project at the Orchard Medical Centre. The case studies demonstrate the success of telehealth deployment within an NHS setting.

Orchard Medical Centre, NHS Bristol
Four years ago the Orchard Medical Centre began a telehealth project with the aim of managing Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) more effectively.

According to Dr Richard Berkley, clinical lead on the telehealth project: "Our scheme was established to assess the benefits of providing more preventive support to patients with heart failure in a community setting. To date the results have been very positive.

We found patients readily adapted to the telehealth monitoring equipment and enjoyed being more involved in their care. Patients became more aware of their readings and how this related to how they were feeling, which gave them a sense of control and understanding that really helped them to manage their condition.

After 12 months we also had a measurable cost-saving to the NHS. Compared with the previous 12 months, the 18 patients had a 46% reduction in hospital admissions, a 67% reduction in A&E attendance and the number of visits to the GP surgery was reduced by 16%."

Tunstall is exhibiting on 15th and 16th of June at exhibit stand 500. The 'Unlocking the benefits of telehealth for GPs' seminar will take place during the conference from 12:05-12:35, on Thursday 16th June.
