Tunstall & NHS Gloucestershire Demonstrate Telehealth Programme Success at eHealth & Telemed 2011

Tunstall HealthcareTunstall Healthcare, the leading provider of telecare and telehealth solutions, is exhibiting its advanced telehealthcare solutions at the Royal Society of Medicine's eHealth and TeleMed 2011 event.

At the exhibition Tunstall will demonstrate how telehealth technology can enhance quality of life for those with long-term needs, whilst offering health and social care services cost-effective models of care.

Two speakers from NHS Gloucestershire will also be presenting their experiences of implementing a large-scale telehealth programme with Tunstall to support management of long-term conditions, as part of the event's conference programme. Gloucester-based Dr Will Haynes will look at telehealth from the GP's perspective; and Linda Prosser, Locality Commissioning Director, Gloucestershire PCT will discuss telehealth and its deployment throughout Gloucestershire from a commissioning perspective.

In June 2011, NHS Gloucestershire announced a partnership with Tunstall to provide telehealth solutions to 2,000 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic heart failure (CHF), chronic heart disease (CHD) and diabetes. The partnership will see Tunstall working with local clinicians across both secondary and primary care in Gloucestershire, to redesign care pathways and implement clinical protocols with telehealth embedded as a viable option for managing patients.

Dr Haynes, who is also the practice-based commissioning lead for Gloucester said: "Widespread use of telehealth technology will complement other developments across the NHS in Gloucestershire to help reduce referrals to hospitals, help more patients to receive their care as close to home as possible, and help more patients to understand better and self-manage their own conditions, within the safety and fabric of telehealth monitoring. As a GP, I welcome the opportunity to use these tools to work with patients to understand their condition."

Tunstall will be demonstrating its range of telehealth solutions at the event, which enable clinicians to devise personalised monitoring plans for those with long-term conditions. By remotely monitoring patients' vital signs on a daily basis, such as blood pressure, pulse rate, blood oxygenation and blood sugar levels, the solutions help to reduce the number of unplanned emergency hospital admissions, the number of visits patients need to make to GP surgeries, and the number of home visits made by clinicians.

This improves the quality of life for patients and their carers, and relieves pressure on NHS resources through early intervention and supported self-management of conditions.
